Sheet Materials
In addition to timber we also specialise in sheet materials, stocking a large range of types and styles all at very competitive prices.
Most sheet materials come in full size boards, generally 2440 x 1220mm (8' x 4'). We can cut most types to size or we have a pre-cut handy panel range of smaller sizes in hardwood plywood and MDF. Whichever you choose, the first two cuts are free.
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) - Manufactured from wood fibres, dry bonded with synthetic resins and then compressed at high frequency, this board is a uniform, strong, compact and stable material that is smooth on both surfaces and particularly even in thickness. As MDF can be cut, screwed, glued, and profiled with normal woodworking tools, and comes in a range of thickness and types, it is particularly suitable for painting, veneering and other forms of decoration. Please see our brochures for further detailed information.
Blockboard - Suitable for interior use only, blockboard can be stained, painted or varnished.
Plywood - Like MDF, plywood is a very versatile board. It is generally made of alternate cross veneers of hardwood or softwood, which are then glued together. We supply WBP versions that are highly resistant to weather, micro-organisms, cold and boiling water, and wet or dry heat.
Chipboard - Made from wood chips and compressed sawdust, to produce a high-density low cost board. The range includes a standard grade (min 600 density) and a tongue and grooved flooring grade (min 700 density) including a moisture resistant version.
OSB (Oriented Strand Board) - A general purpose board for exterior use, made from timber wafers/strands bonded under pressure with waterproof resin. We supply conditioned grade OSB3, which is BBA approved for flat roofs, etc.
Hardboard - A dense, highly compressed wood fibre thin sheet material: our range includes standard, perforated, and oil tempered for exterior use.
Plasterboard - Used for lining internal walls, ceilings and building lightweight partitioning, this wallboard (constructed of aerated gypsum) conforms to class `0' spread of flame fire rating.
Fire Rated boards - The range available includes Pyroc or Viroc cement particle board for interior or exterior use, MDF and Far Eastern plywood to class '0' and '1'.
Insulation and insulation boards - We carry Rockwool insulation, made from volcanic rock and available as a rolled or slab product. It achieves excellent `R' value (thermal resistance), is fire resistant, water repellent, rot and vermin proof, easy to use, and maintenance free - as it retains its thickness. Supplied in a range of thicknesses, whether in rolls or slabs.
We stock Celotex multi-purpose insulation board in a wide range of thicknesses. This is a rigid polyurethane foam board faced with foil/kraft/foil tri-laminate facings. It can be used for loft conversions or stud walls and as insulation when coupled with a dry lining.
We also carry Expanded Polystyrene, a traditional, cheap and easy to use form of insulation.
Thermaroof TR31 & Celotex Tempchek Roof Deck Board -
A complete deck board for flat or sloping roofs, comprising of polyurethane foam bonded on one face to plywood. The other foam face is bonded with aluminium foil as a vapour check liner. It conforms to class '1' surface spread of flame. Laid and fixed over joists, it provides a lightweight, easy to handle, all in one deck board to take 3-layer felt or other coatings.
Pine board - Manufactured from redwood pine and constructed from narrow widths of solid pine for an attractive finish, this board can be cut, shaped, screwed, glued, stained or varnished and used for furniture making (not doors), shelving units, stair treads and tops, etc.
Decorative sheet material - We carry a wide selection of decorative sheet materials, melamine boards faced boards in white or magnolia, or genuine solid wood veneers on MDF in a wide range of species.
We also have a wide range of melamine faced and wood veneered chipboard from 152mm to 915mm wide and in 2440mm lengths. Ideal for shelving, furniture and cupboard making, etc.
Screen panels - An attractive range of pattern perforated hardboard, creating a whole spectrum of design possibilities for radiator cabinets, dividers, shopfitting and decoration, etc.
Postform worktops - Choose from designs by Polyrey or Warerite. Both use a high-pressure laminate process producing a tough and consistent surface that outperforms the low quality `continuous laminate' process found on cheaper worktops. These tops are highly scratch and chemical resistant and meet the highest standards for worktops, including the stringent BS3794.
Solid hardwood worktops - Exceptionally high quality tops offering all the beauty of natural wood. Stocked in Beech, Rustic Beech and Oak whilst Beech Butcher Block, Oak Iroko, European Walnut, Maple, Cherry and Ash are available to order. Many are offered in a choice of lengths up to 4 meters long and 26mm or 27mm and 40mm or 42mm thick. Tops come unfinished for your choice of decoration.
Champion offer a wide range of finishes including oils and two-pack varnishes.
