When To Treat TImber Fence Panels

When fitting new fence panels, it’s not always clear whether you need to treat them straight away or if you should wait a bit. At Champion, all our timber fence panels come with a 15-year service life guarantee, if they are correctly cared for and maintained.

There’s no doubt that fences get hit the worst in bad weather so preserving them gives them the best chance of lasting a long time. The initial treatment that’s applied to all our fence panels gives them a short-term resistance but they still need protection against insects, rot and natural weathering. To keep your fence looking great we would advise treating it about a month after fitting in the summer, or longer in the winter; to make sure they are dry throughout.

Your fence panels require a low level of maintenance to keep them looking their best all year round. In order for our 15-year service life guarantee to be upheld, we suggest that you treat your fence once a year. This will protect against dampness, rot and decay and help to make sure your fence lasts as long as possible.

Treating protects against the elements

Timber fencing can be affected by rain, wind and sunlight. Protecting your timber fence panels using a preservative will help prevent dull silvering and greying that naturally occurs in all outdoor timber.

Our hugely popular contemporary fence panels are pressure treated, making them much more resistant than the untreated alternatives

Treating gives your fence panels a facelift

If you’re looking to resurrect rather than replace, then there are plenty of options for doing up an existing timber fence. There are loads of products on the market that can make your fence panels look like they’re in tip-top condition. There are preservatives that will enhance the natural colouring of the timber and you can also get paints in a whole range of colours with weather preservatives mixed in.
